HappyFeet-Legends History

  • 1988: The original 3-5 year old programming was started by Andy Barney at the indoor facility he ran under the moniker Mini-Kickers. La Petite preschools ran field trips to the indoor soccer facility giving the kids an opportunity to learn about soccer. After 6 stressful back-to-back, one-hour lessons, Andy quickly realized that an educational curriculum sensitive to the needs of young children needed to be developed. It was then that stories such as "George the Giant" and "Gus, the Banana Gobbling Gorilla" were created.
  • 1990’s: The Kansas City Legends Soccer Club provided Mini-Kicker’s sessions to young kids as a way to start teams for the club.
  • 2006: Scott Gaither, a long-time friend and co-worker of Andy, was brainstorming ways to create Legends teams on the north side of Kansas City. While watching his daughter participate in a gymnastics program at her preschool he realized the opportunity to take the Mini-Kicker program to preschools and daycares around Kansas City.
  • 2006: In October Andy and Scott formed HappyFeet, combined the story-time curriculum with nursery rhymes to create a totally unique soccer enrichment program to offer to early childcare centers across Kansas City. In 6 months they expanded into 60 centers throughout the metro area.
  • 2007: In May Andy and Scott sold their first HappyFeet Legends franchise to a former Legends player, Andrew Clifton in Springfield, Missouri.
  • 2007: In the two months that followed franchises were also sold to Meurig Cundy in Wichita, Kansas and Tom Power on the Florida coast.
  • 2008: In January Andrew Clifton moved back to Kansas City to begin working on franchise support and sales. This continued to sell franchises to people from the HappyFeet Legends “black book” totaling eleven franchise outlets.
  • 2008: In July the franchise team came up with “Goal 2009” to put together a marketing strategies plan and execute it beginning with the 2009 NSCAA convention for franchise sales to people that we didn’t know, people that weren’t in the “black book”.
  • 2008/2009: These years were fantastic for the franchise system as the franchise owners and the corporate team as significant work was done improving the marketing and operational systems for HappyFeet. Many massive improvements were conceived and implemented!
  • 2010: The new systems and concepts that were dreamed and implemented the previous year were successful! Sixteen franchises were added bringing the total to twenty-seven.
  • 2011: In August HappyFeet Legends International, in response to the rapid growth, added Jamie Leeper to the franchise support team as the National Director of Franchise Support.
  • 2011: The growing trend continued with sixteen franchises added bringing the total to forty-three.
  • 2012: Has started with a bang adding four franchises in California, one in Indiana, and another two in Ohio during the first quarter. We’ve added both Matt Holdaway, the franchise owner of Northwest Arkansas, and Jim Ruden, the franchise owner of Indianapolis and South Columbus, to the franchise support team as Regional Director of Franchise Support.
  • 2013: Continues to grow and adds our first international locations in Scotland, Ireland and Canada.
  • 2014: Break into the Michigan market for the first time, as well as finalizing a deal for programming to start in Hawaii. Started the Shining Stars promgramming in Kansas City and 5 other territories around the country. HappyFeet goes international by opening locations in Saskatchewan, Canada, Ireland and Scotland. Legends celebrates 25 years!
